My New Toy!!!

Tah Dah!

Nope, not a sex toy. Not a bong. It's my new button machine!! Yay!

After using a Badge-A-Minit hand crank for nearly three years it finally met it's demise due to my super human mirror making ninja skills. At first I cursed, then nearly cried (it broke the night before a big three day show), but then instead.....

I celebrated!!!!

I've been dying for a new machine. Trying to balance each individual hand pressed mirror in it's crazy ass plastic part compartment and then having it slip out of my lap 1 out of every 5 mirrors in one big traumatizing cat scaring bang, pieces flying everywhere type of mess. Not so fun!

Having to squeeze and squeeze until my hands had indents, just to hope when I unveiled my latest creation that it hadn't come out crooked, scrunched up or not even sealed at all? Not so fun!

Being taunted day in and day out with the Badge-A-Minit logo that screamed "go ahead and try to make a badge in a minute, betch!" Again, not so fun!

My new machine? AWESOMELY FUN!

No slipping, no sliding, no cursing or taunting. Just making. Making lots and lots of 100% correctly made goodies one after the other after the other. Oh yeah and you know what else? I can make one in less than a minute.

Holden Lee Tees

Cheryl and her son Holden, then 6 1/2, started Holden Lee Tees in 2008. A mother and son collaboration of epic proportions, monsters and I imagine lots of giggles share their designs on Etsy and in many local Portland boutiques and craft events around the Pacific Northwest.

Holden weaves a backdrop for every drawing. Together this mother and son team decide where each creature will live transforming Holden's creations into wearable, functional art for the whole family.

Why hello 2011, nice to meet you! Sorry it took me so long to greet you but I've been taking a much needed break from your frantic sister, 2010. She kind of wore me out last year.

I'd like you to see what I've been up to. It involves flowers & felt and I think you'll kinda dig it since Spring is on the way.

I made these for Valentines Day, they were such a hit they sold out before I could even get them up in my Etsy shop! I've made tons more since and in an array of spring & summery colors. I hope you love them. All I have to do is wait for you to bless us Portland folk with a little more of that sunshine stuff & I'll be able to photograph them.

I've been playing with other materials too, mostly metal. See!

Well, that's about all I've been doing hair wise lately. Just wanted to show you I haven't been ignoring you entirely, 2011. Aside from new hair flair I've also made new ribbon bracelets, pocket mirrors, necklaces, rings & earrings. Some of which I'll be showing off soon at Buckman Elementary in March and local shops around town this month like Mag-Big, Union Rose, Mississippi Treehouse, Plue & The Crafty Wonderland Pop-up Shop! Cocoa, The Life of an Antisocial Guinea Pig

We set up a web-cam so we can view our antisocial guinea doing her day to day pig type things. She’s pretty cute when she goes into stealth mode and steals a carrot from her food dish and then dives back into her house.

Operational hours of the Cocoa cam will be from approx. 8am-8:30pm, except on weekends. Ha! She’s in our sons’ room so when their lights are out for the night so are hers. Her being in the boys room is also why there is no sound. We’re cool with invading her privacy just not theirs. ;o)

You know you're successful when...

You get copied!

Though it doesn't feel great, not even a little. Here are some of my thoughts on how it happens and how you can deal with it and perhaps grow stronger.

You get an idea, an awesome idea! Something that is truly unique and original and it's all yours. You go for it. You're excited!! You buy the supplies, you test it out, you play with colors and sizes even shapes until it's just right. You put your heart, time and even a little elbow grease into it because it represents, well, you. People dig it! You put it online, you take it to shows. More people dig it! You land retail accounts wholesale accounts and soon even online retailers are contacting you. You've built an amazing customer base & even MORE people dig it! Yay! It's official, you've done it - success!!

BUT success can be noticed by the wrong kind of people. What kind of people you ask?? The green headed monster kind of people. They're the most dangerous because they're of the idea stealing variety. They lack all creativity. NO! SAY IT ISN'T SO! Sorry, it's true. They don't care about who they hurt or who they're ripping off. They just want in. Somehow. Anyhow. Why? It's simple, what they're doing isn't working, or at least not like they thought it would. They want all the success with none of the effort. Boo!

How you deal. You do the hardest thing of all. You ignore it. You let them do what they're doing because these green headed monsters bring themselves down. They are noticed all right but not by the kind of people they were hoping for. They're noticed for what they are, craft zombies. They don't "get" what you get and their copycat creations are missing something. That something? You!

The moral of my little craft copier story?

Keep doing what you do best and go make something dammit because you're better, smarter, craftier and gosh darn it people like you!!

Operation Guinea

Leave it to our family to pick out the most antisocial of one of the most social breed of animals around, guinea pigs. Cocoa was a gift for my son's 12th birthday. After helping with the class guinea pig he really wanted one of his own. Unfortunately it seems Cocoa has other plans. She hides in her big purple house. She only makes her cute little piggy noises in the dark. She eats and drinks once we're all in bed. When trying to hold her she does flips over her big purple house, tips her food and runs faster then our silly clumsy human hands can catch her. She is queen piggy spaz. That is why I've decided to enact operation guinea!! I will de-spaz this pig, I will. Bring on the pig!

I first discovered Deadworry on Etsy back in 2008. I'd hearted their shop immediately after finding one of their owl field bags (exactly like the one below) after doing a search for all things hoot-ish. When I checked to see what else they had to offer, I was more than pleasantly surprised!

Two years later I'd have never imagined that I'd get an email asking if I'd be interested in having some of my own handmade goodies available for sale on their website??!! I am beyond flattered, not to mention giddy. I've never been asked to work with an online shop I've actually heard of before. Why Sell If You Don't Have The Stock??!

I ordered 10 packages of these for my business. They are NOT in stock. Ritz shipped out the one and only package they did have but did not inform me of this fun fact until AFTER they'd already shipped my package. I don't need one. I need 10. I would've canceled my order entirely four days ago when I first ordered them & gone elsewhere. Now I'm out the time, shipping & the money. The money they will refund my account in ANOTHER four days. Unprofessional. I contacted customer support & they refuse to tell me if I will get a refund on my shipping costs once I return my shipment, whenever it decides to arrive. Now I have to go back to my own customers who are waiting for the products I create with these brads to disappoint them & make me look like a clown. AWESOME! Thanks Ritz. I will never shop here again. What a completely shady way of doing business.

Oh and a side note, they still have them for sale on their website. Nice.

I first heard XX last year, care of my commercial nixing satellite radio. I wasn't so sure. Crystalised struck me at first as far too breathy. Actually, I found it a bit nauseating...but then I heard it again and found myself turning it up, way up. The beat was intoxicating. What wasn't so intoxicating? Not being able to find their CD locally or for that matter, at all. I checked all my "normal" go-to music places and nada. I gave up until just recently when I heard another & then yet ANOTHER song by the group. What can I say, I guess I just dig their quirky 19 year old-esque style.

Why Hello ModCloth!!

Over the last few months I've been becoming a bigger & bigger fan of all things ModCloth. I'm addicted, it's true. I have even subscribed to their RSS feed, a step I've never taken for ANYTHING web-ish, just so I could stop obsessively checking their page for any and everything new.

I've made several online purchases thus far.

The only problem I find is that by the time I've saved up enough money the items I adore are sold out. Oh and not because they're expensive, but because I'm broke! Making me A) Want to cry/and or whine or B) Whip out the credit card for a "just in case" it sells out purchase.

I've of course done both & on more than one occasion.

This is not Beck-like, at all. I'm not what I'd call a "girly" girl & I'm typically pretty far from materialistic but for some reason ModCloth seems to be my vice and I don't mind one bit.

I've added a bazillion things to my cart to pretend shop, I've made wish-lists, asked to be notified when something sold out is back in stock, loved countless items & even gone as far as sharing links to what I buy on my Facebook page to see if my giddy finds are truly as exciting as I find them to be.

Sometimes yes, and sometimes not so much...

So after visiting ModCloth tonight and finding even more goodies (yay magical RSS feed) I had to share!!

After finishing up my first craft show of 2009 I was reminded why I do what I do! The smiles, the conversation, the contacts, the friends, the next door crafty neighbors and of course the customers!!

Crafty Wonderland was just what I needed today. I really think the atmosphere from the show coupled with all of the warm thoughts and wishes went a long way.

I came home, soaked up some sun on the back of Mik's scooter, ate a nummy dinner out with the family and decided it was time to move forward. I've reopened my Etsy shop and am back on track to being a happy shiny Beck again.

Something I'm sure my Grandma is very happy about!

I'm desperate for sun, warmth and all things flowery. I want to get rid of this stupid gloomy mood hanging over my wee little melon. If it could just be Spring tomorrow, totally and truly spring, I feel like I'd magically snap out of it all. The thought of seeing pretty tulips (my favorite flower, sorry miss daisy), birds tweeting sweet tweets and the warmth of sunshine dancing on my skin....well, just makes me feel all kinds of better.

So here I'll wait for my hero called Spring!

The Cocoa Cam!

We set up a web-cam so we can view our antisocial guinea doing her day to day pig type things. She’s pretty cute when she goes into stealth mode and steals a carrot from her food dish and then dives back into her house.

Operational hours of the Cocoa cam will be from approx. 8am-8:30pm, except on weekends. Ha! She’s in our sons’ room so when their lights are out for the night so are hers. Her being in the boys room is also why there is no sound. We’re cool with invading her privacy just not theirs. ;o)
